Originally intended as something smaller and spontaneous, 'Femmephonic' grew into a curated hybridised film screening and musical performance night. Bringing together five musicians, the result is a femme focused and stripped back intersection of visuals and sound.
The film lineup consists of four homespun live performance music videos highlighting independent musicians. The sound recorded live from the set, and the visuals constructed to reflect something intentional about the particular song or artist.
The live concert and screening night formed part of an 'Open Mic Film Night' showcase. It saw four mini acoustic sets performed by Zia King, Akona Ngobese, Aéryn and Gabriela Diamond. The films were played in-between their performances, preceding each particular artist's onstage appearance. The films as such were able to slot in as small visual flairs to open their sets.
Katja - Where the Elbow Meets the Bow
The first film I worked on for this project. Filmed in the beautiful Coromandel peninsula in New Zealand with my cousin, Katja Boonzaier. I was adamant that we had to make something during my stay in the country. Ordering a microphone that had to be shipped from hundreds of kilometres away, and grabbing a micro SD that morning from the only shop in town to have one, we shot this on my last day in the area--somewhat hurriedly so as to make our movie plans for the evening! Doing five different takes experimenting with unique angles, only two were combined and included in the final video, with the wide angle being the take in which Katja's performance comes from.
